Father’s Day is not just a day when parents can have more connections. It is celebrated on the third Sunday of June to honor parents, grandparents, step-parents and all men who play the role of father. As most holidays go back a long time, it is difficult to trace the origin, but most people agree that Sonora Dodd played a significant role at the beginning of the holidays. This year, Father’s Day is June 17, 2018!
A story of Father’s Day
Sonora Louise Dodd Smart to first mention the idea of a Father’s Day in 1909. She wanted a special day in honor of her father, William Smart. When Sonora’s mother was dead in giving birth to her sixth child, William had to raise the newborn and five children infrequently on a farm in Washington State. As an adult, Sonora realized how much his father raised his children as a single father.
Sonora wanted Father’s Day to be celebrated on the first Sunday in June, as she was close to her father’s birthday. Instead, the first celebration of Father’s Day was held on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson celebrated Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June. It was not until 1972 that Richard Nixon gave him Father’s Day on a national holiday, some 60 years after Mother’s Day.
